Leaders in Gas Storage Technology

According to the “Peak Shaving by Gas Reservation” report by STIM Analytics, China, the United States, and South Korea are recognized as leaders in gas storage and peak shaving technologies, based on patent activity. China leads, accounting for over 54% of patents, particularly excelling in liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage and storage in abandoned mines. The United States ranks second, focusing on technologies like compressed natural gas (CNG) storage and line packing. South Korea also demonstrates significant activity, particularly in gas storage within abandoned mines, underscoring its engineering expertise.

In terms of technological focus, China prioritizes large-scale and stable storage solutions, particularly LNG, reflecting its ambitions to develop robust gas infrastructure. The U.S. focuses on distribution systems and flexible, compressed storage methods. South Korea emphasizes marine and shipbuilding-related gas technologies, leveraging its industrial strengths in these sectors.

Key industry players such as Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine and Samsung Heavy Industries (South Korea), ExxonMobil (U.S.), and Chinese companies like CNOOC are pivotal in advancing the field. Beyond patent numbers, citation counts indicate that South Korean patents are highly valued for their technical and industrial impact. Overall, China leads globally in patent volume and LNG storage, while the U.S. and South Korea contribute significant innovations within their specialized areas.
